Performance Race Art is the brainchild of former Royal Marine Commando Chris Grove. The journey to becoming one of the UK’s most sought after paint designers for the cycling industry is a colourful one; as with all successful entrepreneurs, it isn’t a straight line.
After studying Graphic Design and Illustration at Carmarthenshire Art College, Chris Grove joined the Royal Marines, achieving his commando green beret in 1995. After many years serving as a soldier in operational theatre, he applied for the intelligence section where he utilised his illustration and design background to produce maps and models for Special Operations. Deep down, his love for art and design never left him.
Whilst home from deployment, Chris was inspired by watching his heroes across cycling and motorsport with all their custom kit, adorned by sponsor logos or personal touches designed to make the riders stand out. This was something of an epiphany for him as it combined his love of art, with his love of performance sport. From that point onwards, it was decided, Chris started to prepare for what would be a new chapter in his life – design and painting for sport.
Inspired by his first Tour de France and the cycling heroes on their custom painted race bikes, Performance Race Art was born. Born from a passion for the sport. A drive to be the individual who designed and prepared beautiful bikes, for legendary riders, Chris Grove wanted to be the name that professionals turned to for their bespoke designs. Turning ideas into designs which would be cheered on by fanatical fans, bikes that gave their owners that extra mile, bikes which would appear in a million photographs taken on the top of Alpe d’Huez. Those bikes.
Starting off small, and building the business through word of mouth, Chris Grove now designs and sprays bikes for everyone from the passionate amateur, right the way through to club racers, professionals and race teams. If you can dream it, PRA can design it.
Today, Performance Race Art is a well equipped, specialised design and painting workshop. Originality, Creativity and Individuality are the cornerstones upon which we pride our work. Only when we are satisfied, does it get the Chris Grove signature. The ultimate marque recognised globally by a knowing nod from those who know.
